To Cue, or not to Cue?

A few weeks ago, I had a bit of training dilemma, followed by a training epiphany, followed of course, by a new training dilemma. Training Dilemma #1 Epic and I have been working a lot on heeling lately for rally trials. Occasionally Epic will drift a tiny bit. Sometimes it’s a forge, sometimes a lag,Continue reading “To Cue, or not to Cue?”

Pupdate – May 2014 Dog Shows

After our last dog show, I resolved to do something about how Epic appears in profile, so back to conformation handling classes we went. What I learned is that if I hold Epic’s head up by her collar just a bit, and lover the bait to almost my knees, it improves her profile a lot.Continue reading “Pupdate – May 2014 Dog Shows”

Pupdate – Week 23

23 Weeks, 1 Day I have gradually been introducing Epic to some different adult dogs from the ones I typically allow to meet puppies. I am doing this gradually because a negative experience can have long lasting effects. So far she’s handling things very well with new dogs: she’s greeting them appropriately, inviting them toContinue reading “Pupdate – Week 23”

Getting a Handle on Housetraining Issues

For many dog owners, housetraining is the #1 thing we want our dogs to learn. In my experience it is also one of the most frustrating and emotionally charged training issues that dog owners struggle with, and I can relate. Yes I’m a dog trainer and, yes, I’ve had house training issues… When Epic cameContinue reading “Getting a Handle on Housetraining Issues”

Pupdate – Week 18

18 Weeks Since today is Halloween, I took a few photos of Epic..and her pumpkin. This evening was also my last class in Portage La Prairie so I decided to bring both dogs with me since I wasn’t sure what Sean had planned and to avoid the barking etc that tends to go on whenContinue reading “Pupdate – Week 18”

Herding Clinic with Roy Sage – April 20 & 21, 2013

I am a bit behind but two weekends ago, Bear and I headed to St. Norbert, MB for three days of herding. This was my first herding clinic so I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. I’m new enough to the sport to know I don’t really know anything. There were a variety of dogsContinue reading “Herding Clinic with Roy Sage – April 20 & 21, 2013”

Herding – April 6, 2013

Today’s experience reminds me a lot of when I learned to drive a standard car. I knew what I should be doing, I knew how it should be done, I could get the car in gear occasionally but I lacked the timing and coordination to pull it off consistently until I had practiced (and stalled out) many times.

Herding – March 30, 2013

Yesterday, since I had to drive in to Winnipeg to pick up dog food for work, I decided to bring Bear with me and go herding for the first time this year. We have not been out since our first trial in September but we are attending a clinic next month so I figured itContinue reading “Herding – March 30, 2013”

Running Contacts à la Trkman: My thoughts

Since I spoke about running contacts in my 2012 wrap-up post,  I thought I would take some time to share what we did in more detail. I had been toying with teaching a modified four on the floor before our training was interrupted in 2009. What I had been trying to work towards was aContinue reading “Running Contacts à la Trkman: My thoughts”

Looking ahead at dog related goals for 2013

Now that things are slowing down (relatively) for the winter I’m taking some time to consider what I would like to work on this year. I had  look at my 2011/2012 goals and, while we worked  little bit on all of them, the only ones we achieved was fixing the back up 3 steps forContinue reading “Looking ahead at dog related goals for 2013”
